This year, the Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) club Zwaard & Steen will take you into the world of medieval combat!
In our arena, we bring historical European martial arts to life with dynamic demonstrations featuring swords, daggers, spears, and more. These shows highlight just how versatile and technical HEMA really is. You won’t just see the longsword in action — we’ll also showcase fights with various weapons once used by knights and warriors. Speed, precision, and control take center stage — it’s a spectacle you won’t want to miss!
And here’s the twist: as a part of the demonstration you, the audience, get to decide what you want to see. A long spear versus a short dagger? Two shields against two swords? A chaotic free-for-all? You name it, we fight it!
Ever wanted to hold a sword yourself? Now’s your chance! During Castlefest, we offer daily introductory longsword workshops, where our instructors will teach you the basics of sword fighting in a safe and accessible way. You’ll learn fundamental techniques and get hands-on experience with this fascinating martial art.
(Please note: Due to Dutch weapons laws, we have a few safety measures in place — participants must be 18 or older, and we kindly ask that you stay sober if you wish to join the workshop, so save the mead for after the workshop.)
