La Fanfare Moussaka

A journey to the heart of the Balkans

La Fanfare Moussaka is a band with a ‘moussakesque’ ambience, inspired by Balkan and other traditional music. It's five musicians who will make you dance like a sparkly eggplant!

Why Moussaka?

The name of the band was chosen after a dish: Moussaka is an eggplant-based dish common in the Balkans and the Middle East, with many local and regional variations. That’s why its mascot is a sparkling eggplant, called Moussa! It is a plush hand-made toy, with a big red nose, flower-shaped eyes and creepy teeth.

Musicians

La Fanfare Moussaka consists of five musicians (sometimes six but rarely). Luciola & Greto play the trumpet, Barnab the accordion, Plops the euphonium (a small tuba) and Patchik the tapan (a traditionnal percussion). Luciola, Greto & Barnab are the main vocalists, but there are also some choirs with everyone. The lyrics are in various languages : Romani, Albanian, Serbian, Occitan, English & French languages.

Repertoire

La Fanfare Moussaka takes you on a journey to the heart of the Balkans, with an original French touch. The result is a rich melting pot of traditional music, improvisations and compositions inspired by the Balkans, sometimes by Occitan or Celtic music. It is also a mix of instrumental music and songs. The lyrics deal with traditionnal practices (marriage, celebrations…), but also raise questions that are still very relevant today, such as going to war. While some themes are sad and melancholic, the music is mostly a call to party and to multiculturalism.

Castlefest will be their first concert in the Netherlands, woo-hoo !
