Libertalia is a french pirate celtic and folk music band. With its tempestuous music and adventurous songs, the crew pays homage to the golden age of libertarian piracy, in the festive and rowdy atmosphere of a tavern in Tortuga!
The band brings the age of buccaneers to life through songs both in French and in English, telling the mysterious story of the utopian city of Libertalia. In the late 17th century, in northern Madagascar, pirates from all nations founded this legendary city, creating a society built on freedom and brotherhood, defying the mighty monarchies of the time.
The songs of Libertalia are a fusion of historical facts and maritime legends. They chart the perilous tales of the bold pirates who once ruled the seas. They also delve deep into the myths and superstitions that have haunted sailors for centuries, from ghost ships sailing silent through the fog to sea monsters rising from the depths to devour any who dare cross their path. With each tune, the band takes you through a world where History meets the dark mysteries of the ocean depths.
Each member embodies a pirate character and holds their post aboard the ship: the Gunner (vocals, guitar and harmonica), the Quartermaster (vocals), the Helmsman (bagpipes and Irish flutes), the Shipwright (fiddle and diatonic accordion), the Bosun (bass guitar), El Gato Negro (drums), and the Limping One (bodhrán and guitar). They claim the crew need no Captain: truth be told, the one they had was marooned on an isle long ago, left to rot like the scurvy dog they be!
Libertalia will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2025! Since its creation, the band has released three albums: Haul Away! (2011), Écumeurs de Rêves (2015), and Les Anges Noirs de l’Utopie (2022). With the introduction of drums in this latest album, the music gained a dynamic rock edge while still delivering heartfelt ballads among their rough shanties.
The band is currently expanding its repertoire with new songs, which can only be heard live in concert for now, heading towards a brand-new album!
