Workshop: From Call to Growl - Reclaim your voice

Vocal liberation workshop

Known as the vocalist of dark folk band Sowulo, Micky Huijsmans invites you to explore the wild, untamed power of your voice.

In this workshop you will work with two ancient forms of vocal expression:

  • Kulning - A high, piercing, calling technique once used by women in medieval Scandinavia mainly to call their cattle across vast mountain valleys.
Grunting - The raw, primal sounds of anger and passion, often heard in metal music and associated with masculine energy.

Though very different in sound, both styles ask the same thing: to take up space and let your voice be heard without holding back.

In From Call to Growl, you will explore the full range of the voice beyond gender norms and other limiting boundaries, reconnecting with your natural, wild sound.

No singing experience is needed, only curiosity!

Micky Huijsmans

Micky Huijsmans is known as vocalist of the dark-folk group Sowulo and works as a singing teacher and vocal coach.

She specializes in traditional- and metal vocal techniques as well as vocal liberation.

With years of experience guiding students, Micky helps people let their voices sound freer, stronger, and more authentic in a safe environment, so they can sing and speak more confidently in any situation.

Micky shares:

"In my 10 years as a vocal teacher, I’ve met countless students who felt deeply inhibited in their voices. They told me about the panic that can arise during something as simple as singing a birthday song, expressing an opinion to friends, or giving a presentation at work. In essence; afraid of being heard.”

Letting your voice be heard is not only for those “born as a nightingale.”

Letting your voice be heard is a right for everyone.
